British Birds: Woodpecker

One of the three woodpecker species that are seen in Britain, the Great Spotted is distinctive by it's monochrome markings and flashes of bright red. It is during early spring that woodpeckers begin to establish their territories, and they do this by drumming on healthy solid trees where they can make the loudest noise. The cushioned head of a woodpecker enables it to hammer out a resonating beat on wood striking the tree at a rate of up to twenty times per second!

This print is part of a series of my favourite British Birds, with the original drawn in ink and painted with watercolour highlights.
10% of the profits from each print sold will be donated to the RSPB.
